Rep.-elect Ramirez inspired by daughter’s Reagan rock

By | November 20th, 2010

Colorado state Rep.-elect Robert Ramirez, R-Westminster, will take office in January after a very narrow victory that will give Republicans 33-32 control of the House. I caught up with him on Friday, the day after the results of his election were official, and asked him why he decided to run for office.

He said his wife and mother-in-law and daughter had been urging him to run. After the 2008 elections, he began making inquiries to the party, but said he got no response then. And he questioned whether the timing was right.

“So one night I was sitting on the couch and I was looking at my wife and daughter and I said, ‘You know, I can’t do this. I don’t have time for it. We’re involved in everything.’”

He said his daughter, 11 at the time, left the room and some minutes later brought back a rock on which she’d written, “Concentrated power will always be the enemy of liberty.” That’s a version of a quote attributed to President Ronald Reagan.

Ramirez said his daughter told him to keep the rock, and when he thought about quitting, to “‘remember that when I grow up, I want a country that’s going to be like this one, and if you don’t do something, I’m not going to have it.’”

Inspired, Ramirez made another inquiry about running – and the rest is history.
