Sen. Udall’s hall of mirrors: Raise the debt and reduce it

By | July 7th, 2011

What would you think about someone who earns a reliable ‘F’ from the National Taxpayers Union* lecturing on fiscal responsibility? You’d think you were listening to U.S. Sen. Mark Udall, D-Colo. But to really enter the funhouse, listen to Udall’s recent remarks [with annotations] on the debt ceiling debate…

“We’re more broadly having this debate because the time is upon us to decide the economic future of our country.”

[O.K., we're with you there.]

“Yes, we’ve got to raise the national debt.”

[Uh oh, premise problem.]

“But, this is about our economic future. And this is the country that will be inherited by our children and their grandchildren.”

[Obligatory mention of "children" signifying "future."]

“And quite simply, Madame President, we’re not going to win the global economic race in this 21st century unless we start taking action now to improve our economy, grow American jobs and get our debt under control.”

[O.K., hold up. Maybe we're missing some subtleties here, but it sounds like he said within the space of 25 seconds that "we've got to raise the national debt" AND we've got to "get our debt under control."]

* While serving in the House from 1999 to 2008, Udall was graded an ‘F’ each year (save for a ‘D’ in 2003) by the the NTU, which also gave him an ‘F’ for 2009 and 2010 in the Senate.
